Climate Change and Inflation Targeting Frameworks

CEP and E-axes Forum are co-hosting a webinar on climate change and inflation targeting frameworks. The webinar will address how monetary policy can adapt to a world where negative supply shocks caused by climate change as well as the introduction of carbon taxes may intensify persistent inflationary pressures.

  • Alexander M. Dietrich is a research economist in the Research Unit of Danmarks Nationalbank, interested in monetary economics, household expectations, and survey methods. His current research topics include inflation expectations and implications of climate change for monetary policy. Mr. Dietrich holds a PhD degree in economics from the University of Tuebingen.
    Elías Albagli is the Director of the Central Bank of Chile´s Monetary Policy Division. Prior to taking this position in August 2018, he was the Director of the Bank´s Research Division. Previously he was Manager of Modeling and Economic Analysis of the Bank, and worked in the Bank’s Economic Research Division as a senior economist and as an economic analyst. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business and a Master’s in Financial Economics from the Catholic University of Chile. He received his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 2010 and was an assistant professor of Economics and Finance at the University of Southern California from 2010 to 2013. Mr. Albagli has taught courses on Financial Markets and Macroeconomics at different institutions, including the Economics Department at the Catholic University of Chile and the Economics and Business Management Department at the University of Chile. He currently teaches the seminar “Planetary Limits and Economic Development".
    Luiz Awazu Pereira da Silva was Deputy General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) from October 2015 to August 2023. During his time at the BIS, he was also acting Chief Risk Officer, Chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee and Chair of the Environment and Sustainable Steering Group. Before joining the BIS, Mr. Pereira da Silva had been Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Brazil since 2010. Prior to that, he worked in various positions for the World Bank in Washington DC, Tokyo and Southern Africa. He also served as Chief Economist for the Brazilian Ministry of Budget and Planning, and as Brazil’s Deputy Finance Minister in charge of international affairs. Mr. Pereira da Silva holds a doctorate in economics and MPhil from Panthéon-Sorbonne University and graduated from the École des Hautes Etudes Commerciales (HEC) Paris and the Institut d’Études Politiques (Sciences Po) in Paris. He is currently Visiting Professor in Practice at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
    Pierre Monnin (Moderator) is a Senior Fellow at the Council on Economic Policies (CEP) and a Visiting Professor in Practice at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment in the London School of Economics and Political Science. His work focuses on monetary policy, financial regulation, and their links with environmental and social sustainability. Prior to that, he was with the Swiss National Bank (SNB) in various roles for ten years – with a focus on financial stability and macroprudential policy as well as on financial markets developments. He also worked at Man Investments, developing asset allocation strategies for alternative investments, and was a Lecturer in international money and finance at the University of Neuchatel. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Zurich, a MSc in Economics from Queen Mary, University of London, as well as a MSc in Statistics and a BA in Economics from the University of Neuchatel.
